Laser interferometric detectors of gravitational waves
نویسندگان
چکیده
A laser interferometric detector of gravitational waves is studied and a complete solution (to first order in the metric perturbation) of the coupled Einstein-Maxwell equations with appropriate boundary conditions for the light beams is determined. The phase shift, the light deflection and the rotation of the polarization axis induced by gravitational waves are computed. The results are compared with previous literature, and are shown to hold also for detectors which are large in comparison with the gravitational wavelength. To appear in Classical and Quantum Gravity

A common misconception about LIGO detectors of gravitational waves
A common misconception about laser interferometric detectors of gravitational waves purports that, because the wavelength of laser light and the length of an interferometer’s arm are both stretched by a gravitational wave, no effect should be visible, invoking an analogy with cosmological redshift in an expanding universe. The issue is clarified with the help of a direct calculation.
متن کاملOn searches for gravitational waves from mini-creation events by laser interferometric detectors
As an alternative view to the standard big bang cosmology, the quasi-steady-state cosmology argues that the Universe was not created in a single great explosion: it did not have a beginning, nor will it ever come to an end. The creation of new matter in the Universe is a regular feature occurring through finite explosive events. Each creation event is called a mini-bang, or a minicreation event...
متن کاملAdvanced technologies for future ground-based, laser-interferometric gravitational wave detectors
We present a review of modern optical techniques being used and developed for the field of gravitational wave detection. We describe the current state-of-the-art of gravitational waves detector technologies with regard to optical layouts, suspensions and test masses. We discuss the dominant sources and noise in each of these subsystems and the developments that will help mitigate them for futur...
متن کاملGravitational-wave stochastic background from cosmic strings.
We consider the stochastic background of gravitational waves produced by a network of cosmic strings and assess their accessibility to current and planned gravitational wave detectors, as well as to big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN), cosmic microwave background (CMB), and pulsar timing constraints. We find that current data from interferometric gravitational wave detectors, such as Laser Interfero...
متن کاملFor how long will gravitational waves remain hidden?
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) is a network of first generation interferometric detectors aiming to make the first direct observations of gravitational waves. Progress in the commissioning of the detectors has brought them within a factor of two of their design sensitivity near 150Hz during the most recent science run of the instruments in March of 2005. Further ...
